It Started With An Email
And maybe a little bit of drinking, too.
Bobby Congdon and Bryon Leggett met in 1998 as students working at Clemson University’s radio station (WSBF). They remained lifelong friends, bonding over a shared love of music and, eventually, craft beer.
Around 2017, Bobby sent a fateful message: "Want to move back to Clemson and open a brewery with me?"
"They knew from the beginning that they wanted the brewery to be located in Clemson. After searching for the perfect location for three years, they broke ground in Patrick Square. In 2021, Kite Hill Brewing Co. opened its doors as Clemson’s first-ever brewery."
2026 & Beyond
Passing The Torch
"A little over eight years ago, Bryon and I set off on a journey to open Clemson’s first brewery, and we’re so proud of what we’ve built at Kite Hill. After years of pouring his heart into this place, Bryon has made the decision to step away and focus on his family and career."
Bryon was instrumental in building Kite Hill into what it is today. While he is enjoying his 'brewery retirement,' you will still see him stopping by occasionally to enjoy some well-earned free beer—and to remind Bobby that he is still a quarter-inch taller than him.
A Warm Welcome
The torch now passes to some familiar faces: Ryan and Melissa. You have probably seen them in the taproom sporting their Clemson (or Panthers) gear while their two children run around the beer garden. They are diehard Clemson fans and alumni, bringing amazing energy to the daily operations.

The dynamic duo. Bobby turned a 'what if' into Clemson's first brewery, while Shelly has been the creative backbone since Day 1—booking bands, designing merch, and tirelessly 'quality controlling' the hoppy beers.

Diehard Clemson fans (and Panthers apologists) who you've likely seen chasing their two kids around the beer garden. They are stepping in to run daily operations with fresh energy.
